A healthy lifestyle plays a vital role in boosting the energy in a person's body and providing better performance in every activity of life. During this pandemic, the company wanted to do something for our employees that will be instrumental in you having a healthier lifestyle and becoming a better you.

Week one of our Boot Camp kicked off in May, our colleagues pitched up at the Vineta Sports Field in their fitness gear expecting a beginners boot camp but boy were they in for a surprise. The Dome Health and Training Centre that facilitated the program was ready to make our colleagues work for those summer bodies. Week one focused on speed and strength, the employees played a game of roll-the-dice which determined what exercise they had to do and the amount of time they did it for. It wasn’t all fun and games when they had to walk up the stairs on Monday morning in aches and pain. But that motivated them more to get fit and they were all looking forward to week two.

Week two of the Boot Camp was focused on endurance, it started as a cold misty morning but at the end of the session, everyone was burning a sweat. We had more colleagues that joined in the fun for the second week as the word spread that SU boot camp was the place to be on a Saturday morning. Our colleagues had a burst of energy and they cheered each other on throughout every exercise. It was team spirit in its true form.

Week three came with a change of weather, the east wind made an appearance at the coast, so you can imagine how uncomfortable it was. But this didn’t stop our team, they turned up ready for action as they were close to the finish line and were not about to give up.

All of our employees that attended over the last three weeks celebrated their final session on Saturday where they took what they learned for the last month and showed off their new physic and acquired skills. They were cheered on by their families that came through to show their support whilst the kids enjoyed playing in the kids’ corner.

Each of our participants received a fitness towel, fitness mat, and a diffuser water bottle and a vest for their attendance that was graciously sponsored by some of our partners, Otraco; Komatsu; Dust-A-Site, and Barloworld. Our medical providers NHP and NMC also attended to conduct a wellness screening and to support the event. Our fitness award winners were ecstatic with the prizes received from NHP and NMC.

Patrick Chizabulyo, VP of HR and OOC said that he encourages more employees to participate in the future as a healthy employee is a productive employee. He joined in the fun by participating in the victory run at the end of the session.

Our Boot camp proved to be a very successful event as many of the participants mentioned that this was a great initiative and the gifts they received were a bonus. They are all ready and amped for the next boot camp or fitness event.

To wrap up the event, Alethea Borman; HOD-OOC, thanked the Admin and PR Team for delivering a very successful event. She also reiterated the importance of keeping fit during COVID-19 and encouraged our colleagues to join a gym or continue exercising at home.
