Source: 2021-07-01

In its effort to assist young girls with access to Sanitary Hygiene Items.  The Swakop Uranium Foundation in collaboration with its partners, SNF Chemquest, Namibia Petroleum Corporation of Namibia and MTC Namibia distributed a total of 1200 packs of sanitary pad packs to more than 300 girls at Coastal High School in Swakopmund.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Alethea Borman, HoD for the Office of the Company introduced the project and stated its objectives.  The Swakop Uranium Foundation Sanitary Pads Drive is founded with the aim to distribute Sanitary Pads and create awareness on the topic of Sexual &Reproductive Health in the community and targets girls who come from low-income settings.

The ceremony albeit hosting a smaller than the desired number for the formal program due to COVID-19 risk had managed to make its intended impact and had attracted attention from key Stakeholders.  The Prime Minister of Namibia, Hon. Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila who attended the event virtually lauded the Foundation and its partners for kick-starting such an initiative and added that it is encouraging to see that the Foundation is in touch with the reality on the ground and hopes to see more of its initiatives.

Multiple studies have found that girls in low-income settings miss or struggle at school during menstruation if it is not possible for them to effectively manage their menstrual hygiene which often comes with a stigma attached.

At the Swakop Uranium Foundation we believe that every girl deserves to have a dignified period and it is against this background that we will endeavor to continually and actively engage our stakeholders on ways we can collectively come up with a long-term plan to ensure that girls in low-income settings have access to Sanitary Hygiene items.

The Swakop Uranium Foundation extends its appreciation to all its partners for ensuring the success of this first drive.  Please keep an eye on this page to see what the SUF is up to.
