World Environmental Day Celebrations at Swakop Uranium

Swakop Uranium joined the rest of the world in celebrating the biggest, most globally celebrated day for positive environmental action - World Environmental Day (WED). World Environment Day is marked annually on 5 June as per the declaration of the United Nations in 1972. This year’s World Environmental Day Celebrations took place in China, under the theme “Air Pollution”. Approximately 7 million people worldwide die prematurely each year from air pollution, with about 4 million of these deaths occurring in Asia-Pacific. These, therefore urge governments, industry (including SU), communities and individuals (Employees) to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies which will eventually improve air quality across the globe.

WED is a big celebration, engaging millions across the globe through events on the ground in over 70 countries. This year Swakop Uranium organized different environmental educational stands for information sharing and environmental awareness purposes. The activities at the booths included amongst others: discussions on policies, procedures and work instructions, environmental education videos and displaying information related to WED.

Some of the highlights from SU’s World Environmental Day Celebrations:

Swakop Uranium monitors ambient air quality on a regular basis. The ambient monitoring includes sampling of Thoracic particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), dust fall (TSP) and gaseous pollutants (including volatile organic compounds (VOCs); nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and hydrogen fluoride (HF)). This is done with the aim of checking for pollutants impacting on the immediate environment and human health. This is an indication of how SU values it employees and the environment and we are proud to honor this year’s World Environmental Day.
